The clock tower is the centre of Golders Green, which is a war memorial. A one way system was created at the junction about 20 years ago making everyone stop at lights in a circle rather than being able to drive straight across as before. The day the lights failed saw a far quicker flow of traffic till they were reinstated but nothing changed despite proving the system may work but the series of around four lights per direction did nothing except slow the traffic down.
