Opened in 1866 and closed in 1974 for many years the road bridge shared the crossing with a single line tramway that was used to collect shingle from beneath Castle Hill next to the Western Breakwater. The bridge was opened manually by a capstan by workers from British Rail, who owned the bridge, who were employed in the engine sheds which were out of shot to the right. See http://www.ournewhaven.org.uk/page_id__472_path__0p69p72p.aspx for images of the bridge being opened in the 1950s and 60s.
