Summer Lane Pond is designated a Local Wildlife Site because of its reedbeds. These wetlands, dominated by stands of the common reed Phragmites australis, are a national Priority Habitat and are among the most important sites for birds in the UK. Birds seen here include the mute swan, mallard, moorhen, coot, Canada goose, grebe, heron, kingfisher and reed warbler. The reedbeds also support a variety of insects, including the damselfly and dragonfly.
