The playing field lies behind a section of old terraced housing on Newhaven's east side which itself lies squeezed between a couple of sets of factories and businesses. At the southern end of the field are furniture makers, Bevan Funnell, who have been here for a number of decades. According to Newhaven's 1841 tithe map the recreation ground was once part of a field called Great Brook which stretched westwards to the river.
