Following a £15m redevelopment programme completed in 2011, the former Woolwich Equitable Building Society offices - constructed in 1935 - now forms the backdrop to a "green" General Gordon Square in central Woolwich. This Grade II-listed building is now occupied by South London College. General Charles Gordon of Khartoum (1833-85) was born in Woolwich and educated at the nearby Royal Military Academy. A 'big screen', installed to allow individuals to watch the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games can be seen temporarily obscuring the Woolwich Arsenal Station corner of New Street.
