From what I remember this was part of the water supply, going from here to Golders Green station and locked from the public as long as I remember (almost 50 years), the reason given to stop burglars having access to the gardens. This may have worked had they had railings more than five feet tall at the end of each length. I seem to remember the residents had cultivated the small area at the end of this stretch in Corringham Road so maybe they were given keys in the past.
