Upper Belgrave Road (the A4176) from the Avon Gorge direction curls round this shelter and becomes Blackboy Hill (seen descending on the left). The shelter was funded by donations from the general public and is known as "The Downs Haven". It was built as somewhere where convalescing World War I servicemen from the nearby "Second Southern Queen Victoria Auxiliary Hospital", Blackboy Hill, could rest for short periods whilst they were out-and-about. The hospital itself was converted to a maternity hospital after WWII but eventually closed in 1976. The hospital building is (or was) opposite the private hospital on Blackberry Hill and was (still is ?) used as offices after being decommissioned as a hospital.
