Cut benchmark in the front wall of a terraced house at 42 Searle Street. It is not listed in the benchmarks database but a nearby mark listed there at no 1 Searle Street was not in evidence - there is, however, a feline surprise there! Image Beneath the mark is a cast iron bootscraper, an attractive period feature retained in many of the Victorian terraced houses in this conservation area. The unusual elevation of this example, together with the new-looking steps up to the door, suggest that the level of the pavement may have been lowered since the house was built.
