The tunnel was built for the Edinburgh & Dalkeith Railway, designed by engineer James Jardine and opened in 1831 as a horse-drawn railway to transport coal into Edinburgh. Nowadays it is a cycle path which connects with the Niddrie Burn and Brunstane Burn route eastwards to Musselburgh. The half-moon shape in the distance is the other end of the tunnel.
