Named after one of Brecon's most famous inhabitants, this pub was originally The Shoulder of Mutton. Sarah Kemble was born above it in 1755, the eldest of twelve children born into a theatrical family, and who went on to overcome the disdain shown to actresses in those days to become an accomplished star of the stage. She married an actor who was part of her father's touring company and began to carve a reputation in provincial theatres. Eventually she caught the attention of David Garrick, and landed the lead role in 'Isabella (The Fatal Marriage)'. She was best known for her portrayal of Lady MacBeth and became celebrated as 'the Diva of Drury Lane.'
