A section of Trenchard Street with the older part of Colston Hall and its newer foyer (built between 2007-09). Edward Colston (1636-1721), a merchant and M.P., was born in Church Street. Much of his wealth, although used often for philanthropic purposes, was acquired through the trade and exploitation of slaves. He did however, endow several local schools and almshouses.
