The Gatehouse seen from the approach drive of this fine Tudor Manor House. It was built by Sir William Petre, Secretary of State to four Tudor monarchs. Queen Elizabeth the first spent several nights at the Hall whilst on her Royal Progress of 1561. Sir William's descendants still live in the house which largely retains its Tudor form and appearance, including two priest holes. (These were small hiding places built into the fabric of the building which could conceal catholic priests at times of religious persecution.)
