The buildings nearest the camera date from around 1800. In the past there two or three pubs in this street but only the Steps Inn, formerly the Red Lion, remains. Gilgal now forms part of a one-way traffic system. This has encouraged some drivers to treat the street and Mitton Street, its continuation, as a race track. Only the brave and those who have no other option, walk the narrow pavements here. The photograph was taken in a rare moment when there was no vehicle in sight.
