The photograph shows the motte of Ewyas Harold castle. Quoting from the excellent leaflet available from the bungalow next to the castle: "1048 Osborn Pentecost built the first castle of wood. Norman favourites were then allowed into the country by Edward the Confessor. They used the same site to construct a motte and bailey fortification. It was one of the first castles to be built to a Norman design before the Conquest."
