The name, which is not uncommon, probably dates from the days when most people were not able to read or write. Pubs were often given names which could be illustrated by signs which were easy to identify. In the past there were far more pubs and inns in existence than today, so if you couldn't read the sign was crucial in finding the right place. The black bar at the bottom of this sign almost certainly obliterates the name of Morlands, who used to own the pub. Image Image Image
