The Earl of Buchan is reported as saying that it was built in 1493, but there is no record before 1596. It was remodelled by the 11th Earl of Buchan in 1770-1, when the semi-circular stair tower was added; by the 1970s it was derelict and in poor condition. It was renovated and is now divided into two houses.
