The memorial was erected in honour of the men who worked - and died - in Abercynon Colliery which occupied this site from 1889 to 1988. The memorial was the work of artist John Allinson of Penderyn. It was dedicated on March 31st 1995 by Ken Harrison, a former banksman at the colliery.
