Tom Spring was a bare knuckle boxer from this area who achieved national fame in the early years of the 19th century. This memorial was erected here in the early 1950's, the brainchild of a local Herefordshire Constabulary police sergeant who formed a memorial committee to revere the memory of a local man made good through a life dedicated to the noble art of pugilism, the discipline of sport and who played a part in the development of the rules governing the sport in its formative years.
