Oakwood House was built around 1869. The Wigan family had a banking and hop merchant background and Lewis Davis Wigan built Oakwood House. An Indenture dated 31st December 1913 granted rights to Maidstone Golf Club to use the land as a golf course. During the Second World War the military occupied part of the parkland although not the house itself. Oakwood Park was purchased from the Wigan estate by Kent County Council in October 1948. There are now a number of schools and colleges in the grounds and the house is a hotel and conference centre. As seen here much of the park is also freely accessible.
