The river flows towards this http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3066271 bridge. On the left in the middle distance is a metal wall at the edge of Lloyd Street, part of a modern flood prevention scheme. At the beginning of December 1960, there were devastating floods in this area when the swollen Rhondda Fawr burst its banks after three days of prolonged rain in the river's catchment area. Families living in houses in the lower end of Gelli including Rees Street, Lloyd Street and Smith Street encountered flood water up to 8 feet deep. More than 1,000 people had to be rescued by boats and rafts.
