The Abbey was founded in 1191 by William I as a satellite house of Kelso Abbey and, like Kelso, was populated by an order of Tironesian monks. Many kings visited the Abbey including Edward I of England, David II of Scots and John Baliol (Toom Tabbard) puppet king and subordinate of Edward I.
