Gatehouse, Former Hospital & Poor Law Institution

This impressive, if austere, gatehouse provided the entrance to a former Poor Law Institution that was built in 1840 to accommodate 440 inmates. The complex became Battle Hospital in 1948 specialising in geriatric care until closure in the late 1990s. It was later converted to residential use.
