During 2012 Crossrail works at Whitechapel underground station resulted in the realignment of westbound track: the two lines between the island platforms were closed, whilst the westbound track south of the island platforms was moved about ten feet southwards, into space formerly occupied by a siding, and the platform extended outwards proportionately. Standing on the new bit of platform, where the old westbound track ran, one is outside the old platform roofs and thus has a better view, directly down the track towards the Gherkin.
