The Abingdon Arms used to be a Morland house, until Greene King purchased them in 2000, and transferred brewing of the Morland ales to Bury St. Edmunds. It is a nice touch that this Morland sign remains on the pub's exterior. The Morland business almost survived 300 years, as it was started in 1711 by farmer John Morland in the village of West Ilsley in Berkshire. In the 1880's the brewing operations were moved to Abingdon, where the company had already acquired two local breweries. In the 1920's it purchased the Wantage Brewery Company and some of the present Greene King pubs in Wantage may originally have been owned by them. Image Image
