Wynn Ellis had the monument designed by Charles Barry and built following the death of his wife in 1872. He also erected almshouses in Whitstable to her memory. He was buried here in 1875. Born in 1790, he was a London silk merchant who became a wealthy liberal MP. He was also known as a great art collector.
