St Bartholomew Church was built for £10,000 in 1832 with the aid of a government grant to sponsor religion rather than revolutionary thinking amongst the proletariat. It was famously painted by Camille Pissarro in 1871 and the painting was bought for the National Gallery in 1984 for £650,000. The painting is titled 'The Avenue, Sydenham' and the road in question is now Lawrie Park Avenue from where this photograph is taken. The painting can be viewed at http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/camille-pissarro-the-avenue-sydenham What has clearly changed since 1871 is the parked cars.
