The viaduct formed part of the Stour Valley Railway, which was incorporated in 1846 to construct a 12 mile long railway from Hythe, south of Colchester, using running powers over the Great Eastern Railway to Marks Tey. The viaduct is 1066 feet (325 metres) long and is said to have been built using 7 million bricks.
