A view of Granby Street looking towards its junction with Frederick Street. The library building and its mismatching mid-60s extension occupy a long stretch of this street. The original building was built between 1903-5 as the result of generous part-funding by Andrew Carnegie, the famous philanthropist who was also providing money for the building of many other libraries in England at this time. It was built by Barrowcliff and Allcock of Loughborough, in what has been described as "an exuberant Baroque style" on the site of Island House, a private house. Queen’s Park (opposite) was developed from the 1.6 hectares/4 acre gardens of Island House.
