During the English Civil War hand to hand fighting took place inside St Chad's between defending Royalists and attacking Parliamentarians. This included the use of muskets, both pistol and rifle calibre. Musket balls which hit the church stonework created impact craters on the walls, especially prominent in the west wall seen here.
