The house is the former crossing keeper's cottage. The line was the Great Northern Railway's direct line from Lincoln to Skegness which was not opened until as late as 1913 and never developed the hoped-for traffic. The line ran on an embankment to cross the valley of the River Bain, resulting in the road having to climb to the crossing. The road is the B1192 from Tattershall to Woodhall Spa.
