The memorial, seen here with the 2012 Olympic Rings, was erected in Whitehead Gardens for members of the Lancashire Fusiliers Regiment who were killed in the South African wars at the start of the twentieth century. The regiment headquarters was in Bury. The inscription on the plaque reads: "To the glorious memory of Lancashire Fusiliers line militia & volunteer who gave their their lives for their sovereign & country in South Africa 1900-2. This monument is erected by their comrades of all ranks & by friends of the regiment" Image] The memorial was Grade II-listed in 2017 (List Entry Number: 1440258 https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1440258 Historic England)
