The line from Immingham to Doncaster via Scunthorpe carries a heavy freight traffic and these loops exist to help regulate the traffic so as not to delay the two passenger trains each hour that run between Scunthorpe and Doncaster. The train standing in the loop is a return empty refuse train from Roxby Sidings to Manchester.
