Re-creation of a Francis Frith photograph c1965 at http://www.francisfrith.com/search/england/humberside/south+cave/photos/south+cave_s403024.htm At one time, the arch at Bear Lodge formed the entrance to one drive to Cave Castle, then a private house. Later, the lodge fell into disrepair but, after many years, was restored and is again occupied. Cave Castle was progressively developed into a Hotel and Country Club. The arch at Bear Lodge now leads only to a small housing development bordering the golf course in the grounds of Cave Castle and the drive to the castle has gone. The lodge still looks very much as it did c1965. The bear, from which the lodge takes its name, stands on the pillar at the end of the wall from the left but is largely obscured by the tree. The bear features in the coat of arms of the former owners of the castle.
