A view of Market Square with the Bentinck Memorial as seen from the passageway between the old Town Hall (on the right) and the Old Courthouse. The picture was taken from Market Square Place. The monument was built in 1849 in memory of Lord George Bentinck, younger son of the fourth Duke of Portland who was the local MP for many years. Unfortunately the memorial was never been completed because the money raised by public subscription ran out before a statue of Bentinck could be added.
