St Brynach's belfry, Cwm yr Eglwys

All that remains of the 6th century church that stood here until finally destroyed by the sea on October 25th 1869 (the Royal Charter storm) although storm damage had already washed away part of the structure and the graveyard. A new church was built higher up the village [see Image] to replace this one. The retaining wall along the graveyard behind the beach is still subject to wave damage and at times human remains have been washed out of the earth. Not only has the church gone: the cottages here are mostly holiday homes and the hamlet is strangely deserted after the summer with very few permanent residents.
