This is the original course of the river which meandered across the valley as it got closer to the sea. Much of the river was straightened when the waterway was canalised in the late 18th century though this bend remained until the port was developed by London Brighton & South Coast Railway from the 1850s onwards. A new cut was made to the east that formed Denton Island and left this old stretch to the local small boats. As can be seen when the tide is out there is little more than a trickle of water running through the mud and silt. The town of Newhaven is beyond.
