The present Portaferry Presbyterian Church was built in 1841 at the cost of £1999.12s.6d. The blue plaque commemorates a former minister of the church, William Steel Dickson (1744-1824), one of the leaders of the United Irishmen rebellion of 1798. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Rebellion_of_1798
