Ravensworth Castle was quite extensive, as remaining fragments and earthworks show. Although the masonry castle is quite late, c.1391. It was an important manor of Count Alan of Richmond - with a church and a priest in 1086, and in 1201 it was a stronghold of the FitzHugh's (the illegitimate son of Count Alan) and visited by King John.
