The Burtonwood service area was originally opened in 1974 with the traditional layout of two sites, one on each side of the motorway. However in 2008 the westbound site was closed and the eastbound site redeveloped. Now, traffic wishing to use the services from either direction must access them from the roundabout at junction 8. The service area is operated by Welcome Break.
