The gate posts at the entrance to Reigate Priory. These date from around 1710 and were originally sited at what was the main entrance to the Priory on Bell Street, as put in by John Parsons, owner of the Priory at the time. However they were moved to their current position in 1893 by Lady Henry Somerset. Lady Henry was a leading light in the temperance movement and had the gates moved here because of their original position opposite a pub, "The Castle" - see Image The gateway now divides the playground of Reigate Priory School, the present occupier of the building, hence the plastic furniture.
