Sheldon Free School was already well established in 1730. In 1833 there were forty children on roll. This old school building is 18th-century in appearance though an inscription reads 'Gift of Edward Earl of Digby 1852'. The charity school eventually became a council-run primary school. It formally closed in 1937, but was used as an annexe to the new Stanville Road School for some years afterwards. In the late 1950s, children attending St Giles church came to Sunday School here.
