Also known as the Lower Green, the Cricket Green at Mitcham was part of the common or grazing land of medieval times which largely escaped enclosure in the 18th and 19th centuries. Cricket has been played on The Cricket Green since the early 18th century, making it one of the oldest cricket greens in the world. One hundred years later, Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton used to come here from Merton to watch the sport. The houses on the far side are on the road called Cricket Green.
