Built in the early 19th century as an inn on Thomas Telford's new route through St Albans, this grade II building has subsequently served as a private residence, the Bishop's Palace and a retreat and conference centre (during which time it was known as Diocesan House). During the Second World War it also served as a hospital. It is now a nursing home. For listing particulars see www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1174618.
