The church was almost completely destroyed by arson. It was discovered to be on fire on 16 March 2008 and all that remains is the tower and shell of the building.Evidence for arson came in the form of a memorial stone which was found inside below one of the windows the day after the fire. The stone had not been there 24h previously and was probably used to force entry. There had also been arson attempts on two other churches nearby in previous weeks. £2 million pounds was paid in insurance money but this is still not enough to fully restore the church. The building renovation work started in earnest this month, four years after the fire.
