Ellis Mill - Spider

The spider mechanism is used to connect the springs on the shutters with the striking rod and chain at the end. This allows the miller to easily adjust the angle of the shutters and speed of the mill depending on wind conditions. It also prevents damage as a sudden gust will override the chain weight and blow open the shutters before returning to the original position. Genius!
