Corporation Street

Two Porsches touring round the city centre streets as part of a parade of Porsches and VW Beetles on Sunday 29 September 1985. Visible on the left are buildings from a mix of periods. Corporation Street itself was constructed in the 1930s but WWII intervened and some 1930s buildings were destroyed. On the immediate left is a 1950s building, the occupants of which, the Nationwide Building Society, YWCA and Post Office and Savings Bank have all moved elsewhere in the intervening years. Next to the Post Office are offices built around the 1970s. Beyond that is the pre-WWII former gas and electric showrooms which at one time housed a corporation restaurant, soon to be demolished for the Axa building which was under construction during 1987. The sandstone building on the corner of Hales Street is the Old Grammar School, dating from the 14th century.
