Fisheries Cottage, Mitcham, and the River Wandle

There is an attractive group of old buildings on the River Wandle here in Mitcham, just upriver of London Road from where this photograph is taken. There are three attractive, white weather-boarded mill workers' cottages, two of which date from the mid-18th century. The one seen here, facing the bridge, was dubbed 'Fisheries Cottage' early in the 20th century when it was briefly tenanted by the bailiff of an angling society. Immediately behind is Grove Mill, rebuilt three times after fires, the last time in 1907. It had one of the last wheels in use on the river: this was removed in the early 1960s.
