Bridge over the Varsity Line

The Bedford to Cambridge section of the Oxford and Cambridge Varsity Line opened in 1862 and closed in 1967. This part of the abandoned trackbed is occupied by the Mullard Radio Astronomy Laboratory. The bridges on this part of the railway had distinctive corrugated iron parapets. Image] shows one which has since been demolished. This one is too weak to carry heavy traffic and its arch has been strengthened in its centre by an additional brick pier.
