Either side of the motorway at this point is MOD land, which they refer to as part of the 'defence estate'. In contrast with the past when anything military was only marked on maps in the sketchiest manner; nowadays the MOD maintains a presumption in favour of public access unless there are operational or training requirements, safety or security limits.
