A surprising little discovery made on exploring a pend - relatively modern housing compared with the surrounding Victorian tenements, with definite echoes of White Horse Close at the foot of the High Street about half a mile away. The land here was bought by James Milne & Sons, gasfitters and engineers in 1885. Prior to that date the firm operated from Milton House in the Canongate, hence the street's name. I conclude that the pend led to their new premises on which these houses were later built. The area behind is still a large open builder's yard.
